Programme Definition & Purpose

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the highest academic award granted by the United Academy for Science and Studies (UASS).
This programme is fully research-based and aims to graduate researchers who are able to:

  • Design and execute original scientific work.
  • Generate new knowledge or new practical models.
  • Publish in reputable peer-reviewed journals.
  • Contribute to policy, practice, and professional standards in their field.
    This is not a coursework degree. This is a doctoral research degree with academic supervision, formal research ethics, and public defense.

Objectives

The PhD programme aims to:

Develop advanced skills in research design, critical thinking, academic argumentation, and scientific writing.

Enable candidates to produce an original contribution to knowledge that is significant, defensible, and publishable.

Train candidates for roles in academia (lecturer, assistant professor, research supervisor), research centers, think tanks, consultancies, and high-level policy/leadership positions.

Build a culture of academic integrity, ethical responsibility, and professional research conduct consistent with UK / international standards.

5

Position UASS as an international research body through supervised doctoral output, scientific publications, and institutional collaboration.

Requirements

To be admitted to the PhD at UASS, an applicant must:

Academic Background

  • Hold a Master’s degree (academic or professional) in a discipline relevant to the intended PhD topic.
  • The awarding body must be recognized (university, higher institute, or professional awarding institution judged acceptable by UASS).
  • In exceptional cases, extensive professional/research experience in a highly specialized field may be considered equivalent to a Master’s degree, subject to GSC approval.

Research Proposal

Applicants must submit a clear proposal (typically 5–10 pages) that includes:

    • Provisional title.
    • Background and problem statement.
    • Rationale / significance / originality (why this matters).
    • Brief review of relevant literature showing awareness of existing work and gaps.
    • Research aim(s), objectives, and/or hypotheses/questions.
    • Intended methodology (approach, data source, instruments, analysis methods).
    • Ethical considerations and foreseeable risks (especially with sensitive populations).
    • Expected contribution (the value this research will add).

Interview

All applicants undergo an academic interview to evaluate:

  • Feasibility: is the topic realistically achievable in 3–5 years?
  • Alignment: does the topic fall within the available supervisory expertise?
  • Ethical sensitivity: does the topic involve minors, trauma, medical aspects, political risk, etc.?
  • Research maturity: does the applicant think and speak in a research-minded way?

Documentation

The applicant shall submit:

  • Passport / national ID copy.
  • Certified copies of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and full transcripts.
  • Academic CV (including teaching, training, publications, conference participation, professional roles).
  • Any published work (if available).
  • Language declaration: ability to conduct research and write academically in English or Arabic.

Admission Decision

Outcomes:

  • Unconditional Offer (accepted).
  • Conditional Offer (accepted subject to improvements in proposal, missing documents, language support plan, etc.).
  • Deferral (acceptance postponed up to 12 months, for example if supervisor capacity is full this cycle).
  • Rejection (not suitable for the programme at this stage).

If accepted, the applicant becomes a Provisional Doctoral Candidate.
